The BCCI has decided to expand the role of the fourth umpire role in IPL matches. At a recent meeting for team captains, they stressed that teams shouldn’t distract the fourth umpire since they play an important part in the game. They also made it clear when a batsman can go against the captain’s decision.
The fourth umpire, who works from the boundary, now has the power to check the size of bats, even during practice sessions. They’ll also keep an eye on players heading back to the dugout, especially bowlers finishing their overs.
A note from the BCCI mentioned, The fourth umpire is a key part of the team and shouldn’t be approached by players over any decisions. They can check bats anytime on game days and practice days and will watch bowlers who frequently leave the field to rest.
The fourth umpire will also act as an emergency third umpire, bring in at least six new balls, and make sure only authorized personnel can access the pitch area before the game and during breaks.
Here are some other decisions from the meeting:
1. The 20th over: The whole innings needs to be finished within the given time, including all 20 overs, which is different from ICC rules that only count the time until the 20th over starts.
2. Retired out: For DLS calculations in interrupted matches, a retired batter will count as a wicket.

3. Concussion replacement: A similar replacement can come from nominated substitutes. If a wicketkeeper has a concussion, a replacement can be taken from the squad. If an overseas player is affected, a replacement can come from the Indian substitutes if there are already four overseas players.
4. Time Out notifications: Only the Captain or the batsmen on the field can request a Time Out. If the batsmen ask for it, that will take priority over the Captain’s off-field advice. Coaches can also request a Time Out from the fourth umpire if the Captain is not available.
5. Team Sheets: Team sheets will be distributed after the toss. Captains will have one sheet each for batting and bowling. After the toss, they’ll give a copy to the match referee, and team managers will exchange sheets, handing over ten copies to the Assistant Venue Manager.
Conclusion
These new rules from the BCCI are all about making things clearer, keeping better time, and ensuring everyone plays fair. The expanded role of the fourth umpire shows how vital match officials are for keeping everything running smoothly in IPL 2025. These changes are sure to affect how teams plan and handle key moments during the matches. For more detailed information, visit ESPN Cricinfo
